Need easy dial-up access? Connect your telephone modem and enter '169' as both the user name and password. '16900' is the phone number. The fee will be automatically added to your telephone bill (4 RMB an hour at last report).

Need ADSL in your apartment? Call CNC at 10060. They reportedly have English telephone support, but the guy that comes to your place to install it probably just speaks Chinese. Some apartment complexes have their own arrangements but if you can get CNC's ADSL we recommend it. The flat-rate monthly fee is RMB 120.

There's a new type of Internet Service going around town. It's known alternately as PLC (Power Line Connection) or HPN (Home Plug Network). Look for signs around your compound (probably in Chinese of course). The Torrent has low ID but it still works pretty well and it's cheaper than ADSL. It comes in through your electrical wires and the modem plugs into an electrical socket. Be careful about security!

Internet providers 163 and 169 have changed their dial-up telephone numbers to '16900' as of May 1st, 2003. After that date, the old numbers will no longer work.
